Overview

Demand for broadband continues to grow. The increase in cloud-based services, video-rich content such as Netflix, Skype and Facetime and the internet economy are pushing the need for wider consumer bandwidth. Nielsen's Law predicts consumers will achieve a 50% increase in bandwidth annually. Yet, delivering that increase in bandwidth has been getting harder for telcos.

The initial solution seemed to be fiber to the home. However, as fiber nodes move closer to the home, it is becoming obvious the cost to deploy fiber for the last 250 meters is prohibitive. According to some accounts, over 80% of the cost to deploy fiber is based upon this last segment. This is due to the high cost of trenching and installation for fiber optics. In fact, most fiber to the home deployments will take longer than 10 years to break even.

Sckipio aims to solve this problem.

Sckipio is a semiconductor company solely focused on G.fast chipsets that help telcos leverage existing copper wiring to lower the cost to deploy ultra-high speed broadband on the last 250 meters. Sckipio will help service providers get more out of their existing Cat-3 twisted-pair infrastructure.

G.fast solutions can be used in fiber to the distribution point (FTTdp) solutions to create a hybrid FTTH architecture. Fiber is brought to the distribution point and then G.fast modems are deployed inside the DP to deliver 1 Gbps for the last 250 meters.
